The Monolith is a multi-step progressive sculpture project which begins with a hyperreal clay model and ends with an abstracted wood model. My hyperreal model was based on my child’s mitten and when abstracting it, I wanted to create something that was dynamic, ergonomic, visually interesting, and esthetically pleasing. My final shape has achieved all these aspects with a rounded balanced mass that incorporates both positive and negative space. It has contour lines that are raised and vary between sharp and soft edges that move your eyes and fingertips along the sculpture and make it tactile. It is very ergonomic and has concave grooves that entice you to rest your fingers along both sides and stroke the surface. It can be placed on four of its sides, one of which rocks. During this process I learned how to make vector images and added to my knowledge on aspects of design and esthetics. This project also allowed me to appreciate how delicate and beautiful wood is.
