Ghost nets are abandoned fishing nets left to gather together and grow in size. Just because a net is no longer used by fishers doesn’t mean it stops working. They continue to trap everything in their path. These giant underwater icebergs kill marine life, create oceanic dead zones (there are over 300), block sunlight, break and kill coral and comprise 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Ghost nets continue to float in the ocean's currents, entangling marine wildlife, damaging reefs, invisibly and silently killing
Turtles are the most common marine wildlife found entangle in ghost nets. Rangers rescue and rehabilitate any surviving turtles found in the recovered nets. It is estimated between 4,000-10,000 turtles were entangled in nets over the last decade.
